Silca 731 & 741 Washer

Since 1917, all Silca pumps have used steam pressure-formed leather cup washers to achieve high pressures. The 731 (formerly 73.1) is the classic washer used on pumps produced between 1917 and 2008. In 2008, Pista and SuperPista pumps moved to aluminum barrels with a different size. The 741 (formerly 74.1) Leather Washer fits all pumps produced after 2008.

All SILCA leather washers have come from the same leather converting house in Milan, Italy since the 1960s. These washers are cut from excess leather material that is leftover from the production of luxury items such as handbags, car interiors, and luggage. The washers are hand-cut and pressure-formed from these leather pieces which would otherwise be discarded.

From a functional standpoint, leather gaskets provide a smoother feel and better sealing compared to inexpensive o-rings commonly used in this application. Silca leather gaskets are popular in the professional peloton, especially during the spring classics, as they can withstand heat and maintain a proper seal even when the pump barrel gets hot from inflating multiple wheels.
